IRB Rugby Sevens world series – Twickenham 2010

The IRB Sevens World Series is the pinnacle of sevens rugby, with 12 international teams battling it out over the season to be crowned the best sevens side in the world.

The mix of high-octane attacking rugby, individual skills and tries by the hatful has seen the tournament grow year by year with last season’s series aired in 139 countries across the world.

The IRB Sevens World Series comprises eight individual tournaments across seven countries on five continents and with rugby sevens securing a place in the Olympics in 2016, the sport is set to get even bigger.

For the 2009-10 season the core teams are Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, United States and Wales.

World sevens has been a huge hit with fans too. Each tournament has its own unique festival feel, from the huge ex-pat crowds at the Hong Kong Sevens to the now traditional group fancy dress of the London event.  On the pitch it is the unpredictability of the free-flowing try-laden rugby that keeps the fans coming back for more.

Sevens tournaments are known for their relaxed, inclusive and fun atmosphere, with thrills and spills on the pitch and colourful outfits in the stands.  Whether it is dancing Fijian feet, cool Kiwi efficiency or stern South African physicality, pulsating encounters, breath-taking skills and tries galore are guaranteed on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit.

England – May 22-23, 2010

Potentially the biggest event on the world series calendar, the Emirates Airline London Sevens takes place at the 82,000 capacity Twickenham Stadium. Being in one of the world’s most international cities, it attracts a diverse crowd of ages and nationalities, many of whom observe the unwritten tradition of fancy dress in the stands.

Below are some images from the Twickenham weekend

New Zealand winning a line-out while the Kenyan’s can only look on!

And Some photos of the crowds from the touchline

Just like last year, the Kenyan fans took over a whole corner of the stadium!!!

The party atmosphere was fantastic again.
